Miami-area Billboards and Digital Ads Highlight How the State’s Six-Week Abortion Ban Takes Away Floridians’ Ability to Make Private Medical Decisions
Planned Parenthood in Florida has launched a powerful awareness campaign to shed light on how Florida’s near-total abortion ban puts medical decisions in the hands of politicians instead of patients.
Two billboards on I-95, facing southbound and northbound traffic just south of the Golden Glades interchange, feature an ad depicting what should be a private patient experience in an exam room, highlighting the stark reality when politicians control these deeply personal medical decisions. Additionally, several digital street panels in Downtown Miami and surrounding areas will display the same ad.
Since May 1, 2024, Florida has enforced a law that bans abortion before many people even realize they are pregnant. The six-week abortion ban doesn’t mean women have six weeks to seek care; it means they have only two weeks after a missed period to obtain an abortion before it is illegal in Florida. This extreme restriction, coupled with a forced delay period of 24 hours for patients seeking care, makes it virtually impossible to get an abortion.
Over 600 patients at Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida have been referred to out-of-state resources since May 1 because they exceeded the gestational limits imposed by the state. This near-total abortion ban also lacks any real exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or abuse—forcing survivors to obtain documentation before reaching 15 weeks of pregnancy to access care.
Domestic violence survivors are being forced into impossible situations, while Floridians are being misled by fake clinics that lure them under false promises of abortion care. Meanwhile, patients with serious health conditions face significant hurdles to access necessary care, as the law has created a chilling effect among doctors.
